Builder Questionnaire: Canadian Craftsmen
Please introduce yourself.
Patrick Spano, Canadian Craftsmen
What do you make?
Guitar Bodies, control covers, soon to make necks a full guitar builds as well!
Why do you make what you do?
I grew up playing the guitar from a young age, when I discovered my passion for wood working it was only a matter of time before I wanted to build my self a Tele, and the rest is history! After posting some photos online I got some interest and began building and selling Tele bodies full swing!
What was the first piece of guitar gear that excited or inspired you?
The first piece of gear I lusted after was a Les Paul, growing up players like Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, etc all sang praises of the coveted 59’ Les Paul. Being basically unattainable to us common folk I eventually got a 2012 LP traditional, which to this day is my go to axe.
What’s your current favourite piece of guitar gear?
Besides my beloved 2012 Les Paul Traditional mentioned above, my favourite piece of gear would have to be my fathers “law suit” era acoustic guitar. Passed down to me when I began playing, this odd ball acoustic has always been close to my heart; branded one the headstock as a Granada, but stamped inside as being made by Takamine in the late 70’s, super cool!
What have you been listening to lately?
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of older folk and early rock music music, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Stones. With the long hours I put in at my shop I tend to listen to a lot of Podcasts, typically comedians like Tom Segura, Theo Von, and of course JRE.
Ideally, where do you see yourself/company/brand in 5 years?
Ideally in 5 years I’d like to see myself boing more complete and custom builds, I’m currently learning all I can to advance to the next steps in guitar building! Being self taught I tend to second guess a lot of my work until I’m certain that I’m 100% happy with the final product so I’d like to find a local builder who can teach me a few things and give my work a once over before jumping in fully!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I really appreciate what this site is doing for Canadian builders, it’s awesome to see how many different companies there are in Canada offering truly unique and custom gear; things you might not stumble across on the typical google search, it’s always nice to support Canadian businesses.
